Register for Swimming Lessons Today!
Group swimming lessons are offered in a group setting, 2 days per week with 8 classes per session. The class ratio is 1:7. This is a great format for easy learners. All ages from infants to seniors can participate in Swim Lessons. Choose from mid-day, evening and weekend swimming class schedules designed to fit your family’s busy life. The YMCA of Greater Montgomery makes water safety a priority for our community. Participants begin with a swim test to determine their current swimming level. Participants will develop new skills at each level through progressive formatted lessons. Download the Swim Lesson Cheat Sheet.
Choose from the the 5 age groups we offer swimming lessons:
Parent/Child Swim Lessons (Ages 6 Months – 3 Years)
This class is designed to orient infants and toddlers to the water with the comfort of their parent. The class strengthens the amount of trust between parent and child while teaching parents how to encourage aquatic activity with their child. A parent must be in the water with each child at all times, and children should wear a tight-fitting swimsuit with swim diaper underneath.
Preschool Swim Lessons (Ages 3-5)
The preschool swim program has three levels designed to help children progress and build elementary swimming and safety skills. Children are placed in small groups with the YMCA trained instructors. Class emphasis is on developing the coordination, endurance, and self-confidence of the preschooler.
Youth Lessons (Ages 6-14 years)
The School Aged swim program has 4 levels designed to help children grow personally and develop strokes and safety skills. Emphasis is on endurance, personal safety, skill development, and lifesaving techniques.
Stroke and Turn Clinic for Youth (Ages 6-14 years)
This class acts as a bridge into a swim team level skill set. We will focus on freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly, and backstroke. The focus will also be to work on starts, turns, and finishes, as well as to enhance endurance and speed. This program is offered to children and teenagers 6 to 14 years of age and is only offered within our youth lessons program on Tuesday/Thursday.
Adult Aquatic Programs (Ages 15 years and over)
Adult swim lessons are for those individuals who wish to learn to swim or those who want to improve their technique. Classes have a low student-to-instructor ratio, which allows for personal instruction in each class. Skills emphasized include: basic water acclimation, floating, treading, freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, diving, and much more.
What to bring
Be sure to bring a bathing suit a towel. Many children prefer goggles, but they are not required. It is a good idea to pack a robe or change of clothes for the walk out of the building to the parking lot.
Weather Cancellation Policy
If we have to cancel a group class due to weather, the make up for that class will be held during the following Friday at the regularly scheduled time. There are no make ups for classes missed for personal reasons. Participants can only attend the day and time they were registered for unless otherwise specified by the Aquatics Director.
If for some reason you are unable to attend a session in which you have registered; you must cancel by the Friday before the session begins or you WILL NOT get a refund. By registering and not canceling on time, you are taking a spot from someone else. If you do not cancel in a timely manner it hurts the program and blocks another willing participant from registering. There are NO exceptions to this rule.
If a class offering is full, a participant can be added to the waiting list for a particular class offering, and if a registered participant cancels, individuals on the waiting list will be contacted to fill that spot in the order they were added to the waiting list. Being added to the waiting list does not ensure a spot in a class. The aquatics department will contact you only if we are able to add you the roster. No payment is necessary to be added to a waiting list, but if an individual is moved from the waiting list to the roster, the registration fee will be due in full at that time.
**Parents/guardians of children ages 11 and under must remain on the pool deck during lessons.
