Person of the year
The 73rd YMCA Person of the Year
Hank Hutchinson
The YMCA of Greater Montgomery is proud to announce Hank Hutchinson as the recipient of the 2024 Person of the Year Award. This prestigious honor recognizes Hank’s decades of dedicated service to the youth of Montgomery and his lasting impact on the community through his work with the YMCA, local sports programs, and beyond.
Over the years, Hank has played a pivotal role in the lives of young people in Montgomery, first as a counselor at Camp Chandler, then as the waterfront director, and later as a guiding force in the development of the camp’s facilities. His leadership extended well beyond his day-to-day roles at the Y. As a board member and co-chair of a YMCA Capital Campaign, Hank helped secure funding for crucial initiatives, including the 30-year land lease for Camp Chandler and expanded facilities that continue to benefit future generations of youth. His efforts in youth sports have also been instrumental, coaching numerous football and soccer teams while contributing to the growth of youth athletics in Montgomery.
A lifelong advocate for youth development, Hank’s connection to Camp Chandler runs deep. He first experienced the camp as a young camper in the 1950s and has since become a steadfast champion of its mission. His passion for outdoor experiences and leadership has touched countless lives, inspiring both his children and others to embrace the transformative power of the camp.
In addition to his work with the YMCA, Hank has had a distinguished career as the managing shareholder of a law firm, earning accolades such as the Alabama State Bar President’s Award and the State Bar’s Pro Bono Award. His professional accomplishments are matched by his devotion to his community, serving in leadership roles at his church and consistently striving to make Montgomery a better place for all.
Corey Calcote, Executive Director of the Britton YMCA, praised Hank’s lifelong commitment to the YMCA and the youth of Montgomery: “Hank Hutchinson’s impact on our YMCA and community cannot be overstated. His years of service, from his early days as a camp counselor to his leadership in the Capital Campaign, have shaped the very foundation of what we stand for today. His dedication to youth development and his belief in the power of community are qualities that continue to inspire all of us at the Y. Hank exemplifies the heart and soul of our mission, and we are proud to honor him as our 2024 Person of the Year.”
The Person of the Year award carries special significance as it is chosen through the efforts of the Youth in Government program at the Britton YMCA, a program that empowers teens to play an active role in identifying and recognizing community leaders who exemplify the YMCA’s core values. For 73 years, the teens involved in this program have worked hard to evaluate candidates based on their dedication to service, contributions to the community, and alignment with the YMCA’s mission of promoting healthy living, youth development, and social responsibility. Their thoughtful process and passion for community engagement ensure that the honoree truly represents the highest ideals of the YMCA.
Out of 15 nominees for this year’s Person of the Year Award, Hank Hutchinson was chosen for his unwavering commitment to youth development, his leadership in shaping the future of Camp Chandler, and his profound impact on the community of Montgomery.
The YMCA of Greater Montgomery is honored to present Hank Hutchinson with this well-deserved recognition for his decades of service and lifelong dedication to building a stronger, healthier, and more connected community.
The YMCA Person of the Year banquet is held annually. This is an outstanding way for teens to learn how many caring adults serve youth in our community.
