Cleveland Avenue YMCA Has Lasting Effect On Families

Dorothy Handy has a connection with the Cleveland Avenue YMCA that has spanned over 5 decades. The YMCA has been her lifeline and support system that has helped she and her husband successfully raise five children and five grandchildren with its character-building and physical fitness programs. Growing up, she lost her mother at the age of 8 years old. Having been raised without her natural parents, she realized the importance of a strong support system. After marrying, she and her husband decided to make Montgomery their home with their first apartment one block away from the Cleveland Ave. YMCA. It wasn’t long after her first three children that she realized the importance of our location. Without any extended family in the area, she was determined to find a strong, positive support system to help rear her children. Ms. Handy says, “the answer to my prayer was the Cleveland Avenue YMCA.” She is thankful for all the Y has given her.
