Brown Bag Bus

Full Stomachs. Full Hearts

YMCA of Greater Montgomery’s Mobile Feeding Program

The Brown Bag Bus, a unique initiative by the YMCA of Greater Montgomery, is a mobile feeding program that provides healthy meals to children in underserved areas of Montgomery, Alabama. The bus travels to high-need communities, offering meals to children who might otherwise go hungry. The sound of its horn brings joy and hope, knowing a meal will sustain them for the day.

This YMCA outreach program supplements nearly 500,000 meals served annually.

“My family and I volunteered with the Brown Bag Bus, not realizing it would impact us more than the recipients. Seeing the kids’ joy was memorable. It made me realize the value of my financial contributions and inspired me to give more.” – Jennifer Atkins, Broker/Manager, New Waters Realty

We Are Dedicated to Helping Our Local Community

“The Brown Bag Bus shows our commitment to improving the community. We are working to address a vital community need of food insecurity by meeting people where they are and truly becoming a Y without walls.”

Delivering Healthy Food and Hope to Underserved Neighborhoods

  • Your Support Makes This Possible

The program will provide 100 meals per day during the school year and 1,000 meals per week during the summer. These meals are in addition to the 500,000 meals The Y already distributes through its feeding sites. The program a lows the organization to close the transportation gap for people who are unable to get to the sites.

The bus can seat 30 people and includes a pull-out tent with outdoor dining. Inside, TVs show educational content on food choices. Additional features include games and a counter area where children can learn to prepare healthy snacks while enjoying the ride. It offers a fun, interactive way to teach kids about nutrition.

  • Brown Bag Bus in the News

The great thing about having this traveling feeding program is it can reach areas in our community that are considered to be “high-need” but are not near one of our current physical locations that are already serving 500,000 meals a year. WSFA Featured Brown Bag Bus on a special segment!

Why the Brown Bag Bus Matters

The Brown Bag Bus is more than a vehicle; it’s a moving symbol of hope for families facing food insecurity. By bringing meals directly into neighborhoods, the YMCA of Greater Montgomery helps remove barriers that prevent children from accessing consistent nutrition. For many families, transportation challenges can make it difficult to reach traditional meal distribution sites, even when resources are available.

As a mobile feeding program, the Brown Bag Bus helps ensure that children in high-need areas can receive healthy meals in a safe and welcoming environment. It also creates a positive experience for kids, combining nourishment with encouragement and education. The goal is simple: help children feel supported, cared for, and empowered.

Programs like this reflect the YMCA’s long-standing commitment to strengthening communities and serving those who need it most. Whether through volunteering, donations, or community partnerships, supporters play an essential role in keeping this mission moving forward, one stop, one meal, and one child at a time.
