Rock Steady Boxing
Fight Back Against Parkinson’s with Rock Steady Boxing
A non-contact boxing program at Bell Road YMCA to improve balance, strength, and confidence with PD
Rock Steady Boxing is a health and wellness program designed for people with Parkinson’s Disease, a neurological condition that affects balance, strength, walking, and especially confidence. It’s based on a foundation of non-contact boxing, and it’s very effective for improving many of the challenges people with PD typically experience. The YMCA Rock Steady program utilizes the mechanics of boxing to address physical disability symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease, such as balance issues, stiffness, tremors, coordination difficulties, and soft voice syndrome. Classes are led by trained instructors in a supportive, encouraging environment where participants can move at their own pace while building strength, focus, and confidence over time.Participants are encouraged to focus on progress, not perfection, while developing routines that support everyday movement and independence. The program emphasizes consistency, encouragement, and community to help individuals feel empowered both inside and outside the gym.
Rock Steady Boxing's Impact
The program aims to provide an “arduous hour” of exercise specifically designed for individuals with Parkinson’s. The program is offered at our Bell Road YMCA location. If you have any further questions or would like more information about the Rock Steady program, please let us know. To join, please come to a class and Leigh Ann will get you registered.
Montgomerys Leading Parkinson’s Program
Improve Movement, Balance, and Coordination
Exercise plays a critical role in managing Parkinson’s disease, and non-contact boxing is one of the most effective ways to support mobility and coordination. Rock Steady Boxing at the YMCA of Greater Montgomery uses Parkinson’s-specific exercises to help participants work on balance, agility, and controlled movement in a safe, supportive environment. These guided workouts are designed to help individuals with Parkinson’s stay active and confident in everyday movement.
Build Strength and Reduce Fall Risk
Strength training is essential for people living with Parkinson’s disease. This Parkinson’s boxing program focuses on improving muscle strength, posture, and core stability, all key factors in reducing fall risk. Through adaptive, non-contact boxing drills and functional exercises, participants gain better body control and improved physical endurance while moving at a pace that meets their individual needs.
Support Cognitive Function Through Exercise
Parkinson’s affects both the body and the brain. This specialized exercise program for Parkinson’s disease combines physical movement with mental engagement, helping participants challenge coordination, reaction time, and focus. Research shows that regular, structured exercise can support cognitive health, making Parkinson’s boxing a powerful tool for maintaining overall brain-body connection.
