To work at most aquatic facilities, a lifeguard training certification is required, and many employers prefer Red Cross lifeguard certification because of its strong national standards. The YMCA of Greater Montgomery offers this 2-year course as part of its YMCA life guard training programs, blending hands-on practice with classroom learning.

Lifeguards play a vital role in protecting their community by preventing, recognizing, and responding to water-related emergencies. In as little as 30 hours, participants complete comprehensive lifeguard training certification, learning essential lifesaving skills that prepare them for real-world aquatic safety.

General Information

Our lifeguard program is designed to give every participant the skills, confidence, and support needed for success. It follows national lifeguard training certification and YMCA lifeguard certification standards to ensure readiness for real-world aquatic safety.

Participant Requirements

  • Must be at least 15 years old by the final training day
  • Must present a valid ID on the first day of class
  • Must demonstrate prerequisite swim skills:
    • Swim 300 yards using freestyle and breaststroke without rest
    • Tread water hands-free for 2 minutes
    • Complete a timed brick test
  • Proper swim attire is required for all sessions

Course Details

  • Open to ages 15–99 (YMCA employment requires age 16+)
  • Includes 28+ hours of instruction led by certified staff focused on safety, support, and effective learning
  • Cost: $75 for members and $125 for non-members

Recertification Class

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training is to present the knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of a lifeguard. The program is based on sound decision-making, proper use of rescue equipment, knowledge of water safety, and proficiency in rescue skills. Participants must work (upon completion of the course) 2 shifts per week at the YMCA to be eligible to take this training course.

Instructor Certification

Participants must be at least 17 or turn 17 by the last day of class.
Participants must possess a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification OR Lifeguarding including Deep Water certification – shallow water lifeguarding certificates do not qualify.

This course will require a blended learning portion that is completed prior to the in-person sessions. The link to the online work will be sent out prior to class using the email provided during registration.

Participants must successfully complete the Lifeguarding Instructor Pre-course Skill Session. This session will evaluate your Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR, and AED skills. If you do not demonstrate proficiency in the skills session, you will not be able to continue in the course.
Participant must successfully complete the Lifeguard Instructor Course. This includes meeting all requirements listed above as well:
*Attending and actively participating in all course sessions
*Successfully complete all class activities, including the four practice-teaching assignments
*Score at least 80% on the instructor course final written exam
