Youth in Government

Youth Leadership & Civic Engagement for Alabama Teens

Shaping Future Leaders Through Real Government Experience

Since 1949, the Alabama YMCA Youth Legislature has provided youth and teens hands-on opportunities to learn how state government works through model legislative and judicial programs. Organized through Hi-Y and Government Clubs, this youth leadership and civic engagement experience allows students to draft bills, argue court cases, debate in the State House, and serve in elected or appointed roles. Designed to mirror the Alabama government, the program builds leadership, public speaking skills, confidence, and a lasting understanding of civic responsibility.

Youth in Leadership Programs

Lead in the Statehouse, the Courtroom, and on Campus

  • Youth Legislature Conference

Students step into the role of lawmakers by drafting bills, debating real issues, and experiencing the legislative process inside Alabama’s State House. This hands-on program builds public speaking, critical thinking, and leadership skills in a dynamic, real-world setting.

  • Youth Judicial Program

Students take on the roles of attorneys and justices as they research cases, prepare arguments, and present in mock trial and appellate court settings. This program strengthens critical thinking, public speaking, and a deep understanding of the legal system

  • College Legislature and Staff

The College Program offers returning delegates the chance to take on advanced leadership roles, mentor younger students, and stay actively involved in the legislative and judicial process. It’s a meaningful next step for students passionate about civic engagement and leadership development.
