Youth in Government
Youth Leadership & Civic Engagement for Alabama Teens
Shaping Future Leaders Through Real Government Experience
Since 1949, the Alabama YMCA Youth Legislature has provided youth and teens hands-on opportunities to learn how state government works through model legislative and judicial programs. As part of the YMCA Youth in Government experience, students participate in a realistic simulation of the legislative and judicial process through organized Hi-Y and Government Clubs.
This youth leadership and civic engagement program allows students to draft bills, argue court cases, debate in the State House, and serve in elected or appointed roles. Designed to mirror the Alabama government, the youth in government program builds leadership, public speaking skills, confidence, and a lasting understanding of civic responsibility.

Why Youth In Government Matters
The YMCA Youth in Government program helps students build leadership through real responsibilities and hands-on participation. By serving in elected or appointed roles, teens gain experience that strengthens confidence, decision-making, and communication.
Through youth government programs like this one, students gain a deeper understanding of the legislative and judicial branches. Participants experience how laws are created, debated, and challenged through a realistic model of Alabama government.
Students develop strong communication skills by presenting bills, debating issues, and delivering arguments in formal settings. The experience prepares participants to speak clearly and confidently in front of others.
The YMCA Youth Legislature and judicial programs give students the chance to engage in meaningful civic learning. Students walk away with a stronger understanding of civic responsibility and how they can make an impact in their communities.
Students gain transferable skills that support future success in college and career settings, including leadership, teamwork, writing, and professionalism. Many students also benefit from mentorship and continued involvement through college-level leadership opportunities.
Participants in YMCA YIG join a statewide network of teens who are passionate about leadership, service, and civic engagement. The program encourages students to connect with peers, collaborate, and build lasting friendships.
